St Aidan’s Remembers

November 12, 2017

St Aidan’s students and staff have been paying their respects to the fallen men and women of the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces.

Assemblies this week have focused on the theme of Remembrance and why it is significant to us. Year 10 students C Cowie, J Herdman, M Rich, C Harmison, A Lennox and M Gray led our reflection by sharing their experiences of the WW1 battlefields trip this summer.

We discussed the life of Donald Bell, the first professional footballer to enlist in the British Army and later a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Battle of the Somme, as well as the sacrifices made by soldiers in modern conflicts.

Year 8 art students have also been working hard to create wonderful matchbox sculptures of the WW1 trenches which were on display during our Remembrance assemblies and all students were invited to write the name of someone they would like to remember on a red ribbon which were later tied to a tree and displayed on the school yard.

Events culminated on the yard on Friday with a parade led by army, sea and air force cadets followed by a sounding of The Last Post and 2 minutes of silence attended by the whole school.

Once again it was fantastic to see our boys engage so brilliantly with Remembrance in what has been a truly humbling week for all of us.
