Parent/Teacher Book Club
Book Club
We would like to invite you to join our parent/teacher book club. Here at St Aidan’s, the joy and value of books is something we greatly encourage and celebrate with all of our students. The journey into reading is vital for all of us and the benefits of reading are enormous—so we hope, like us, you will celebrate too.
We would like to begin the book club with one of the books that your son will be reading as part of our Reading Canon. The partnership between teachers and parents during adolescence remains an important part of education. The purpose of this book club is to serve as an opportunity to build that partnership and hopefully help parents to encourage reading and discussion at home by sharing a common interest with your son in the books studied on our reading canon and in English.
As a group, we intend to meet every few weeks, online and face to face to discuss the book we are reading. This will commence in the second week of the new academic year and is aimed at parents of pupils in all year groups. This will give us the opportunity to share our thoughts and ask any questions that might help with our understanding of the text. We will start off by reading ‘The curious Incident of the Dog in the Night’ by Mark Haddon. The book tells the story of a 15-year-old boy described as a mathematician with behavioural issues and the boys will read this in year 7. After that, we will decide as a group what we will read next, whether it be a Canon book or a text studied in English.
At the moment, the Academy is working very hard with promoting reading fluency to ensure our students are confident readers and able to express themselves through literature. With this in mind, we plan to get out and about reading aloud to anyone who will listen! Our first port of call is the local residential care home. Staff and students will visit the care home and read to a small group of residents, benefiting students with practicing their fluency at the same time as offering enjoyment and company to the elderly. We have some exciting times ahead and we can’t wait to share them with you!
