Support our Literacy Drive…

Dear Parent / Carer,

At St Aidan’s we believe that independent reading provides pupils with the confidence and skills to deal with the demands and rigours of Secondary school. Our aim is to put reading and Literacy at the heart of your son’s education, developing and fostering in him a love and appreciation of writing from a wide range of backgrounds. Ofsted acknowledge that ‘A great deal of the texts that are used in Secondary School have a high Reading Age so it is imperative that schools bridge the transition by developing independent, confident readers…’

We believe that to read is to fly and we understand the importance of developing pupils’ literacy skills to improve their life chances. With a clear focus on developing pupils’ literacy, we help pupils to grow to participate fully and happily in adult life. Therefore, the importance of reading is promoted each and every single day. Pupils carry a DEAR book with them at all times and they have dedicated DEAR sessions throughout the academy week where they read in silence. In addition to designated DEAR sessions, Year 7, 8 and 9 have one Accelerated Reader period per fortnight in their English Language curriculum time.

We carry a range of books in our Reading Room but unfortunately the funds available do not always provide us with an amount of money which can expand our library to its full potential. We have done a survey with parents and they have said that they would like to see a wider range of books to enable us to continue with our high standards of the reading opportunities we offer. Therefore we are asking for your support in helping us with this with our Amazon Wish List.
