Visit to Seville 18th – 22nd June 2018

The MFL department arranged a visit to Seville on the 18th June 2018 for four nights, for those y10 students studying GCSE Spanish. This visit gave the students the opportunity to experience the south of Spain and its attractions including a day at Isla Magica theme park. Although Seville has a modern and cosmopolitan culture, the city has preserved its traditional Moorish architecture and charm. It is a city of spectacular monuments and great art, all against the backdrop of a rich culture. Overall, it an extremely positive experience for the students having the opportunity to practise Spanish, try Spanish gastronomy and experience the Spanish culture; all very useful for Spanish GCSE.
Itinerary

DAY 1: Departing from Newcastle and arrival at Malaga. From there we had a private coach will be waiting to transfer us to our accommodation in Seville. After the flight, we had the opportunity to go sightseeing around the Riverside area and we enjoyed the views from the Torre del Oro. DAY 2: Seville is known as one of the great cathedral and university cities of Europe. It is also the heart of bullfighting and flamenco, and an intriguing Moorish heritage. Seville continued to grow from its trading relationships with the Americas and today is a bustling, lively city. We took a walking tour through Seville’s Barrio Santa Cruz, a tiny quarter of narrow streets and whitewashed houses possessing flower-covered patios and ironbound windows. We also visited Seville Cathedral. We began with an ascent of La Giralda, the magnificent bell tower, which provides breath taking views of Seville. We also visited the Patio de los Naranjos, with its central fountain and orange trees; the Treasury; and the Capilla Mayor, which is dominated by the Retablo Mayor, dedicated to the cathedral’s patron saint. Finally, we saw the grandiose Tomb of Columbus, moved to the cathedral in the 1890s. DAY 3: We visited the Plaza de España. Representative of much of the regional architecture, this magnificent construction is highlighted with polychromatic ceramic tiles. The semicircular plaza has a diameter of 200 metres and is flanked by two spectacular towers and a bordering lake that are especially worth seeing. The large brick building flanked at each end by a high tower has fifty eight benches in recesses decorated with tiles, depicting historic episodes for each province of Spain. We also spent time in the Parque de Maria Luisa, Seville’s grand and beautifully landscaped park. A highlight of our visit is the Reales Alcázares, a former Moorish fortress taken over by the Christian kings for use as a palace. It remains one of Spain’s best examples of Mudéjar architecture. We also enjoyed a bit of free time in order to enjoy the Spanish gastronomy and culture in the Market of Triana. DAY 4: Students enjoyed Isla Magica Theme Park in Seville. It features a large lake and many other attractions including roller coasters and various other types of rides as well as both live and cinematic shows. Also, in order to deal with the heat, there was a nice selection of water rides, a flume and rapids. It was such a great fun! DAY 5: Departing from Malaga Airport to Newcastle in the early morning. |
