A Day to Remember
November 12, 2014
St Aidan’s took part in an emotional and moving service today to commemorate the lives of those lost in war. The service was inspired by the ‘Paint a Poppy’ project which has been running for some months. The idea behind the project was brought up by our very own Mr Potts who has been visiting, schools, care homes and community centres, encouraging people to reflect on the lives of those who should still be remembered today by painting a poppy to symbolise the lives. 101 year old Virginia picked up a paint brush for the first time to paint her poppy, showing that you really can do anything. It was then discovered that the youngest member to paint a poppy was 4 year old Kai. Kai Nathan Cuthbertson turned out to be the second cousin of Nathan Cuthbertson, a former St Aidan’s pupil who lost his life in 2008 in Afghanistan and who first inspired the remembrance services at our school – a truly amazing and unexpected link. Virginia and Kai were guests of honour at our Remembrance Day service, along with the Mayor and Mayoress, primary school children and the BBC – look out for us on Look North! The service included: drama, poetry and music then ended with an emotional performance of the last post followed by an extremely respectful 2 minutes silence; you did us proud lads!
Thank you to all those involved in making Remembrance Day 2014 an unforgettable tribute.
