Sporting Clubs
At St Aidan’s we run a wide range of sports to engage all students and our aim is that students become intrinsically motivated to participate in any physical activity when they are older. We enter local and national competitions in Football, Handball, Rugby, Cricket, Badminton, Basketball, Athletics, Cross Country and Dodgeball. We also run house competitions in these activities as well as orienteering to allow all students the opportunity to experience a level of competition.
All students are welcome to attend any sports clubs no matter their experience or ability level. The whole aim is for the students to enjoy the session, develop new skills and meet new people.
Badminton Club
Badminton is a indoor racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. You can play singles or doubles. The club will help to develop your skills, tactics and strategies to help improve your badminton performance. The club also offers the opportunity for students to come and play for fun and enjoy playing with their friends. There are also opportunities to represent the school in local and national competitions.
Basketball Club
Basketball is very popular team sport, where you use your hands to dribble, pass and shoot the ball into a hoop. The club will help to develop your skills, tactics, and strategies to help improve your basketball performance. The club also offers the opportunity for students to come and play for fun and enjoy playing with their friends. There are also opportunities to represent the school in the North East basketball league and play in a range of competitions in the region. We are also part of the Junior NBA program which allows students the chance to play in mini leagues against other schools and wear NBA jerseys. The school is currently the Regional Champions in basketball. The basketball club has links with Lampton Raptore Basktball club who play in the Durham League and the Newcastle Eagles Central Venue League.
Dodgeball
Dodgeball is a team sport in which players on two teams try to throw balls and hit opponents while avoiding being hit themselves. The objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with thrown balls, catching a ball thrown by an opponent, or inducing an opponent to commit a violation, such as stepping outside the court.
This is a fun club for all abilities.
Fitness Club
Students can access the school gym which has treadmills, spinning bikes, rowing machines, free weights and resistance machines. Students can follow training programmes or just come along and be as active as possible. Staff will help to develop the students understanding of the correct techniques and training methods to improve fitness. Due to the size of the gym there is a limit to 16 students being able to attend the club. If you are unable to book onto this club, then this may be the reason why.
Football
We run football training sessions for Year 7’s, 8’s, 9’s and 10 & 11 across different nights of the week. All abilities are welcome to come along and play. The sessions are designed to help develop skills, techniques, and tactics in football as well as lots of fun games.
The school enters each year group into the local Sunderland School league and cup competitions along with some year groups entering the County and National competitions.
All pupils are encourage to attend training even if they aren’t picked to play in the team. We hope that all pupils will get the chance to represent the school if they want to at some point during their time at St Aidan’s.
Orienteering
Orienteering is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport that exercises mind and body. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map. In competitive orienteering the challenge is to complete the course in the quickest time choosing your own best route.
The school uses Ashbrooke Sports Club as the base, where there are over 20 check points hidden around the site. Students work in teams and use the maps to locate the codes, the fastest team wins.
Rugby
The club will help to develop your skills, tactics and strategies to help improve your rugbyl performance. The club also offers the opportunity for students to come and play for fun and enjoy playing with their friends. We enter into local competitions, so there is plenty of opportunities to play against other schools. We are also linked with Sunderland RFC who are based at Ashbrook Sports club, right next to St Aidan’s. This allows the boys to use their facilities for games and training.
Running Club
Develop your fitness and running, complete local running routes around Backhouse Park and Ashbrooke sports club. There are also opportunities to represent the school in local and regional cross country competitions.
Table Tennis
Table tennis is an indoor game based on tennis, played with small bats and a ball bounced on a table divided by a net. The club will help to develop your skills, tactics and strategies to help improve your table tennis performance. The club also offers the opportunity for students to come and play for fun and enjoy playing with their friends.
Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport played by two teams of six players each. The teams are separated by a net, and the objective is to make the ball touch the court within the opposing sides playing areas before it can be returned. A team is allowed to touch the ball three times before returning it, making sure the ball doesn’t hit the floor on their side before sending it over the net. Volleyball has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964.
The club will allow more confident players the opportunity to play competitive games, as well as supporting beginners to develop their knowledge of the key skills and shots of volleyball.
All levels of abilities are welcome.
