YMT – Year 9

January 21, 2018

50 Year 9 pupils set off bright and early on the morning of Monday 15th January for three days and two nights at the Youth Village in Consett. For some this is the third visit in as many years, testament to the amazing programme that is delivered.

On arrival the team were ready and waiting.  The retreat starting with the introduction of the theme ‘Choices’.  The impact of our choices was back up by the story of Stan Tookie Williams who by making a choice when he was young to protect his family and friends ended up creating the Crips (and Bloods) the legacy of this stands to this very day.

The first team challenge was to build a tower with newspaper which could hold an egg for at least 10 seconds.  The boys were very disappointed that he staff won!

After a lovely lunch we got settled into our rooms the braved the cold for a game of catch the flag. The white team were victorious although there were a few dodgy decisions along the way.

After a hot shower and a change of clothes we came back together to talk about choices, situations that we have no control over and those that we do.  We then moved onto exploring love.

An evening watching TV, and a late night for some before a good nights sleep preparing for the day ahead.

Tuesday started with a hearty breakfast and a ‘wake me up’ game of Ladders then a long walk to the park in the snow. After an hour of playing football and rounders we headed black to the village. After a cup of tea and a hot shower the boys were raring to go for their game of giant jenga. After several games it was time for lunch.

In the afternoon we had the big debate, agreeing and disagreeing on a range of topics including ‘Do you think you can change the world?’

After some chill time playing games and on the Xbox we had another great meal then joined in a heartfelt reflection. The moments of silence throughout this time was extremely powerful.

On Wednesday morning, once we were packed and bedrooms tidied we had breakfast then joined together for one last time. All elements of the visits were pulled together, giving all the boys the opportunity to reflect on what they can take away from their time at the YMT.

Choices can have a impact not only on your own but other peoples lives
